December Fun!

In STEM Lab we are studying the rock cycle and making rocks out of candy.  Here is an example of our tasty work.

Do you believe in magic elves?  In our classrooms we have elves and we are writing them letters! Their names are Hershey and Mr. Larry. They are watching to make sure we follow our PBIS guidelines and to join in with the fun things we do.  Our elves put funny notes and pictures up for us. For example, Hershey put a mustache on Dale Earnhardt Jr. and they also sit in funny places.

2nd Quarter Update!

November has arrived!  Happy Thanksgiving!  Check out the great things we are learning this month:
  • Literacy - We are learning how to make inferences while reading fiction and nonfiction texts.  We are also working to summarize what we read and compare the different points of view.
  • Math - In math we will be continuing our work on multi-step word problems including multiplication and division with remainders.  We will begin investigating parts of shapes and angles, measuring angles, classifying triangles and types of lines.
  • Writing - We are currently working to publish our personal narratives and will begin writing a persuasive piece in mid-November.
  • Science - We will focus on the Moon, its phases, and how it affects life on Earth.
  • Social Studies - We will study slavery as it relates to North Carolina history, changes over time, and our upcoming field trip to Latta Plantation.

First Week Jitters

The first week of school has come and gone...and we all survived!  The kiddos in room 305 settled in wonderfully and hit the ground running.  They started with Daily 5 rotations where they practiced reading to self.  They also learned about the CAFE Menu of reading strategies which grew to include Check for Understanding, Cross Checking, Tune In to Interesting Words and Back Up and Reread.  I always knew those rising fourth graders were fantastic readers but they sure did blow me away this week with their sharp skills!

In Mrs. Little's math class students began the week with a place value review and a discussion of factors and multiples.  They moved on to create factor rainbows and identify prime and composite numbers.  They were math rock stars!

This is Wherritt's At!

This is Wherritt's At!

Keep up with us here throughout the year as we document the great things we're learning in 4th grade!

Meet Ms. Paul!

Ms. Paul will be joining our 4th Grade Team this year as a Student Teacher from UNCC.  She comes to us with experience from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system where she assisted students with reading, math and writing in many classrooms.  Ms. Paul loves to travel and has even lived in two countries other than the United States!  We are looking forward to learning all about her travels and experiences this year. Welcome to 4th Grade Ms. Paul!
